How Much Salt Does a Water Softener Use?
Salt is the only real running cost of a softener. Here's a realistic estimate for your household — in bags and dollars — so there are no surprises.
Water Softener Salt Calculator
Estimate how much salt your softener uses — and what it costs — each year.
That's about 10 bags a year — a bag every 38 days or so.
Estimate only. Every install comes with 400 lbs of salt to start — close to a full year for many Idaho families.

Your salt bill comes down to three things: how hard your water is, how much water your household uses, and how efficiently the softener regenerates. An older "timer" softener regenerates on a fixed schedule whether it needs to or not. A modern demand-initiated unit like the NuGen Fusion XT only regenerates when the resin is actually full — which is where most of the salt (and money) savings come from. Harder water means more grains to remove, which means more salt.
